I remember the first time I learned about light dimmers as a child. I was visiting a neighborhood friend’s house when I discovered it. Their dining room light switch was a circular white knob that allowed you to set the brightness of the light depending on what tone you wanted to create for the room. Cue the Vibes. I thought this was the coolest thing! You mean, there’s more than one way to have light?! I thought to myself. In my house, there was only one setting, on or off! No gray area.
I’m no Electrician (bless them and their fine workmanship). But as I have come to understand, a standard switch is simply binary. It’s either on or off. When it’s on, full power flows directly to the bulb without interruption. A dimmer on the other hand, essentially adds control in between by limiting how much of that power actually gets through. When it comes to setting moods and lighting, dimmers are absolutely cool. But this admiration I have for dimmers stops at light bulbs. And guess what darling, you’re a light, but you ain’t a light bulb. You’re a special kind of light.
Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” We are called to be the light of the world. So how did so many of us pick up dimming mechanisms to limit how much power actually shines through us? Why are so many of us comfortable in hiding?
While there are some seasons where God is intentionally keeping us hidden, there are many seasons where we are holding back from the MORE God is calling us to. If you’re reading this and you know that God is calling you out of hiding into being all that He has called you to be, I urge you to come out, come out wherever you are!
There are many reasons that we choose to dim our light. From:
Idolizing our comfort zones
Worrying about what people may think if you launch that new business
The fear of sharing a testimony that is tied to the deliverance of people who are currently walking that path
Feeling unqualified to carry the mantle that God has placed on your life
Or simply lacking clarity.
Come out, Come out, wherever you are!
Whatever the reason for your dimmer, I believe that this article found you because it’s time to come out of hiding. Each of us, when operating in the fullness of who God created us to be, carries an answer that the world needs.
